Use n8n with MonstarX

In shortEnter your n8n instance's address and an n8n API key in the n8n row in Backend → Cloud. MonstarX's builder can then list and read your workflows and their executions, for example to build an app that calls a workflow's webhook or to find why a run failed. It only reads — it does not run or change workflows.

Read your n8n workflows and how their runs went.

n8n is a workflow automation tool: you connect apps and steps into workflows that run on a trigger, and each run is an execution. Connect your n8n instance with an API key (a password-like code that lets software use your n8n) and MonstarX’s builder — the AI you chat with — can read your workflows and their runs while it works: see what a workflow’s webhook expects before it wires your app to it, or look into why last night’s run failed.

This is a business tool: MonstarX reads n8n for you. The app you build never gets your key.

What MonstarX can doWhen
List your workflows, up to 100 at a timeAny mode

Read one execution — how a run wentAny mode

What it never does: run, activate, deactivate, create, edit or delete workflows, or retry or stop executions.

  • An n8n instance that is reachable on the internet over HTTPS at a normal web address — n8n Cloud (like https://your-name.app.n8n.cloud) or your own server. Addresses on a private network, bare IP addresses and localhost are refused.
  • n8n’s API. It is not available during an n8n Cloud free trial; upgrade first. On a self-hosted instance, the public API must not be switched off.
  • You own the MonstarX project. Only the owner can connect or disconnect a tool.
  1. Sign in to n8n and go to Settings > n8n API.

  2. Select Create an API key, choose a Label (like MonstarX) and an Expiration.

  3. On an Enterprise plan you also choose Scopes: give it workflow:list, workflow:read, execution:list and execution:read. On other plans a key has full access.

  4. Copy My API Key.

n8n’s own guide: Authentication.

  1. Open your project and click Backend in the top bar, then Cloud.

  2. Scroll to Connectors, find n8n and click Connect.

  3. Type your instance’s address in n8n instance URL (just the address, like https://your-name.app.n8n.cloud), paste the key into the API key field, and click Connect.

  4. MonstarX checks both by listing one workflow. When it works, the row says Connected to and your instance’s address. If the address or key is refused, you see the error and nothing is saved.

You typeWhat happens
“Read my n8n workflow ‘New booking’ and make the booking form send to its webhook.”MonstarX reads the workflow, finds what its webhook expects and, in Build mode, wires the form to it.
“Why did my ‘Daily report’ workflow fail last night?”It lists that workflow’s executions, reads the failed one and explains.
“Which of my n8n workflows are active?”It lists your workflows and their state.
  • Stays with MonstarX. The key is stored encrypted on MonstarX’s servers. It is never written into your app’s code or given to your app.
  • Read-only. MonstarX only reads. On Enterprise, give the key read scopes only.
  • Read as information. Workflow data and execution results can contain your business data; MonstarX treats them as information, never as instructions.
  • Disconnect any time. Click Disconnect beside n8n in BackendCloud and confirm Disconnect n8n from this project?. MonstarX forgets the address and key. Delete the key under Settings > n8n API too if you no longer need it.
  • Each request to your instance must answer within 15 seconds. A very slow or sleeping instance may time out; try again.
  • When the key expires in n8n, requests fail. Create a new key and connect again.
  • To have your app trigger a workflow, ask MonstarX to call the workflow’s webhook from your app — the webhook address is part of the workflow, not this connection.
Can MonstarX run my n8n workflows?

Not through this connection — it only reads workflows and executions. Your app can still start a workflow by calling its webhook; ask MonstarX to build that.

Does it work with self-hosted n8n?

Yes, if your instance is reachable from the internet at an HTTPS address and its public API is on. Instances on a private network or on localhost cannot be reached.

Why is my key refused?

Check the address starts with https:// and has no ? part, that your plan includes the n8n API (not the Cloud free trial), and that the key has not expired.
